Certain types of nuclear fusion throw off more energy than they absorb. Take Westinghouse, the US power plant company. Its fusion with British Nuclear Fuels enabled BNFL to quadruple its initial investment within six years. Now the experiment appears to be reversing: new owner Toshiba reckons it could take two decades just to recoup its investment.
